Red Devils Topple #6-Ranked Blue Jays 1-0
(Carlisle, Pa.) - The Dickinson College women's soccer team knocked-off #6-ranked Johns Hopkins University, 1-0, on Tuesday evening.
The win is the first over Hopkins since the 2005 season regular season. The Red Devils met the Blue Jays in the Centennial Conference final in both 2008 and 2009. The teams tied in the 2008 championship before JHU advanced on penalty kicks.
The Red Devils had a couple of strong chances early, but saw shots slip just wide of the post. They finally connected in the 35th minute, forcing a corner kick.
First-year Rosalin Savoie (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) served the corner into the penalty area where it was cleared out by the Hopkins defense. The ball went right back to Savoie who served another cross into the box. Senior Ashley Kunkle (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) headed the ball into the corner of the net for the game's lone goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper Meredith Maguire was able to get a hand on the ball but could not make the save.
The Red Devils held strong throughout the second half, despite an increased intensity from the Blue Jays. Hopkins managed 20 shots in the second half, but could not net the equalizer.
Sophomore Annie Wiechert (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) played outstanding in goal, making 12 saves on the night. She made a great play late in the game when Paulina Goodman broke through the defense for a dangerous scoring opportunity.
Genevieve Olson (Quincy, Mass./Thayer Academy) turned in strong performance in the midfield while Marissa Kunkle (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) and Ashley Fields (Far Hills, N.J./Ridge) anchored the defensive effort. Casey Reilly (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) also played well defensively for the Devils.
The Red Devils improve to 5-2-1 overall and 2-1 in the conference. They are home again on Saturday, hosting Muhlenberg College at 1:00 pm.
