#2 Herons shut out #18 Rochester 3-0
GENEVA, N.Y.—The No. 2 William Smith soccer team scored three goals in a matter of 3 minutes, 49 seconds to defeat No. 18 University of Rochester 3-0 in a non-conference game played this afternoon on Cozzens Field. The Herons are now 6-0-1, while the Yellowjackets (5-2-0) dropped their second match of the season.
William Smith secured its seventh straight shutout. Senior goalie Amanda Davis stopped the two shots she faced in the opening 78:09. Sophomore Chelsea Dunay came in to play the final 11:51 and made one save. Bridget Lang played the opening 76:15 and recorded eight saves. Allison Bernstein came in for the final 13:35 and had one save.
After a scoreless first half, senior Jamie Sawyer broke through in the 68th minute for her second goal of the season. A shot by senior Chelsea England was knocked away by the Rochester keeper, but Sawyer got her head on the rebound and redirected it into the back of the goal. Just 30 second later, junior Whitney Frary collected a pass from first-year Dineo Mmutla and drilled a hot into the goal to make it 2-0.
Then 3:19 second later, Frary struck again, this time after a pass from first-year Krista Longo. Frary now leads the Herons with five goals this season.
William Smith enjoyed a 25-6 lead in shots as well as an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The Herons will begin league play on Saturday, Sept. 24 when they host Clarkson at 2 p.m.
