Strong Second Half Secures Red Devil Classic Title for Women's Soccer
(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson College women's soccer team erupted for three second half goals to improve to 2-0 on the season with a 3-0 win over Lycoming College to capture the 2011 Red Devil Classic.
Junior Marisa Kunkle (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) struck first with an assist from Samantha Friday (Southborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional) in the 61st minute. The Red Devils doubled the advantage in the 73rd minute as first-year Allie Young (New Canaan, Conn./St. Luke's) tallied the first goal of her collegiate career with assists from sophomore Olivia Licata (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands) and classmate Kerri Bergin (Allendale, N.J./Northern Highlands).
Bergin recorded the second assist of her young career, setting up junior Ashley Fields (Far Hills, N.J./Ridge) for the Devils' final tally.
Dickinson was dominant throughout the game, holding a 29-2 advantage in shots. The Red Devils forced 21 corners on the day while allowing just one in the defensive end of the field. Junior goaltender Annie Weichert (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) recorded the shutout, making just one save behind an outstanding defensive effort.
Caitlin Dougherty made 11 saves for Lycoming (0-2).
The Red Devils travel to Penn State Altoona on Tuesday for a 7:00 pm kick-off.
