Strong Effort Falls Short Againt #9-Ranked Messiah
(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's soccer team turned in a solid performance, falling to #9-ranked Messiah College, 2-0, on Tuesday night at Phyllis Joan Miller Memorial Field. Messiah entered the match ranked ninth by D3soccer.com and 10th in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll, released late Tuesday afternoon.
Messiah controlled play for the better part of the match, but the Red Devil defense held its own in the defensive third of the field.
Sophomore goalkeeper Charlotte Armour (New Haven, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall) played well in the nets for Dickinson, making seven saves in addition to strong play on a number of dangerous crosses. Messiah forced 12 corners while not allowing any in their defensive end.
The Falcons held a 23-0 advantage in shots, but the Devils forced many wide of any danger.
Holly Burgard tallied a pair of assists on the night, serving a ball to Nikki Elsaesser in the 25th minute for the game-winner. She recorded her second of the match, finding Erin Sollenberger in the 55th minute for an insurance goal.
The Red Devils made some strong attacking runs in the second half, but were unable to penetrate the defense. Sophomore Audra Larson recorded the shutout for Messiah as the Falcons improve to 6-2 on the season.
The Red Devils slip to 4-3-2 overall. They are home again on Saturday, hosting Muhlenberg College for homecoming, at 2:00 pm.
